Keyword research can get your site off to a great start

    You have a site or are developing a site and you want it to show up in the first page or two of search engine results. In order to do this, you must optimize your web pages for the words and phrases people will be using in a search. If done properly, your site will be in the first page or two of results. If not, you will be buried in the huge numbers of results.

    To illustrate this, I'll pretend to be building a website were I intend to sell antique furniture. I'll do a little research on the keywords I think people are likely to use while searching the internet. Here are the results:

    This keyword has 6,030 searches daily but it also has 258,000,000 competitors! Looking at the search results, the top pages seem well optimized and established. Placing in the first two pages of search results will be difficult.

    This keyword has 2,088 searches daily and only 299,000 competitors. The first six results returned in google are directory sites. The next four are dealers. Looking at the titles of the pages, it appears that a website could get to position # 7 with careful optimization.

"antiques and collectibles"

    This keyword has 363 daily searches with 5,320,000 competitors. A look at the top search results indicates that getting to the top 2 pages of results for this term is not impossible but difficult.

"glass collectibles"

    This keyword has 2,382 daily searches and 377,000 competitors. A look at the top results indicates that gaining top placement in search engines would not be too difficult but could take time.

   Ok, that is a small sample of what keyword research can do for you. Just looking at the above results, I know that I will need to have good content optimized for the three substitue keywords and that I could find my web pages listed in the first two pages of search results. I also know that I must create a lot of text content using not only the exact phrases but also the individual words that make up those phrases because that is part of what got the top performers where they are.
